The body of this fish is spindle-shaped, with a nearly circular cross-section. The two dorsal fins are set far apart, with the first dorsal fin having the longest first spine, and each subsequent spine becoming progressively shorter. Behind the second dorsal fin are 7 to 9 finlets, and 7 finlets are found behind the anal fin. The back of the body is dark brown, while the belly is light gray.
